The Shoreham Centre is a fabulous venue, and I feel very fortunate to be using it for my Zumba and Zumba Gold classes. Having moved from Brighton to Southwick 5 years ago I have since been getting to know Shoreham and absolutely love it! I was offered the class at The Shoreham Centre by chance, and I’m so pleased that I took that chance as the classes are very popular. It would appear that the people of Shoreham just love to dance!!!
What is Zumba?
It’s only the most popular dance fitness programme in the world! For 20 years now Instructors have been bringing Latin and International grooves to schools, community centres and gyms. The classes are so successful in helping people get fit, both physically and mentally, that there are now over 100,000 instructors globally.
Shoreham has me!
I started doing Zumba 11 years ago when I was 43. I’d tried lots of exercise classes and gyms but not being a sporty sort of person I found most of them boring or just not my thing. Then I went to a Zumba class in Brighton. As soon as the music started the energy in the room changed and there was a buzz of excitement. The instructor started the warm up and that was it… I was hooked, and haven’t looked back since.
Group exercise is a great way to meet new people, become part of a community, improve your health and general wellbeing. There are countless studies that show Dance fitness is proven to reduce stress and anxiety, help in weight loss, improve coordination, flexibility, balance and range of motion. This is why Zumba Gold is becoming so popular with the over 50’s, it won’t stop you getting old, but it will help our bodies deal with the changes brought on by the ageing process.
Because dance includes so many varied movements, you will find that you’ll be working your whole body throughout the session. Unlike the gym, which normally involves very repetitive machine work. If you love music and dancing, then this is the group exercise for you. The class is comprised of around 12-15 dance routines that are professionally choreographed to ensure a full body workout. The best thing is…..you don’t feel like you’re exercising because it’s such great fun!
I also teach BollyX, a Bollywood inspired dance fitness programme, so expect to find some Bhangra, Bollywood and Indian Pop nestling alongside the Latin sounds of Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton and Flamenco. A really eclectic mix of fantastic music to dance along to.
Zumba Gold is the same fabulous music but the choreographies are simplified and the class is a low intensity workout. There’s no jumping, twisting or spinning movements in a Zumba Gold class. It’s ideally suited to beginners and the over 50’s, but I have people of all ages that come the Gold sessions. I create a warm and welcoming atmosphere at the Shoreham Centre, an environment that is not competitive or judgemental of peoples’ age and ability, or body size and shape.
Zumba has an ethos, and that is to be inclusive and empowering to everyone that comes, and that is what you can expect at a class of Zumba with Jo. If you would like to give it a try, you will find me Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in Shoreham, dancing away!
