Shoreham Independent Traders Collective
While the Shoreham Independent Traders Collective has only been going since August 2020 during one of the most difficult periods in trading history we are feeling pretty optimistic and upbeat about the future. During this period we have seen new businesses join the town, which is enormously exciting and people have been showing strong support for shopping local. Shoreham is growing in size, with several new housing developments and we have a great opportunity to build our unique town centre to meet this wider community alongside the visitor economy.
In September 2020, led by Ben Towers from The Pad Clothing, and with space at St Mary De Haura provided free of charge, a monthly meeting was arranged. We were all determined to make the meetings very focused and outcome driven. Members of Adur District Council were invited to come along so we could be a part of the discussions and we are really pleased that following these meetings the barriers have been removed, free parking was provided over the Christmas period and we are in discussion about the signage around the town.
We were given the challenge by Adur Council to provide something for Christmas customers. The Shoreham Light Parade (our annual Christmas fair and weekend) was cancelled and we organised a ‘safe’ alternative “The Shoreham Christmas Treasure Hunt” which was launched on 12th December 2020 to encourage people to visit the wide range of independent shops and businesses in Shoreham. As a part of this activity we worked in association with saydesignUK to launched the enjoyshorehambysea.co.uk website to provide a single point to find out about what was happening in Shoreham. This is being developed into a magnificent website where we can promote coordinated activities while advertising the amazing range of independent shops and businesses.
Everyone has their own particular area of interest but we can all come together when we discuss our businesses in relation to the town. It is important to remember that the visitor experience of Shoreham-by-Sea has built up over years of active use and visits. Working cooperatively provides a number of advantages: Sharing knowledge and information, co-ordinating marketing opportunities and activities, using our collective voice to lobby and provide an opinion, pooling ideas not to mention providing moral support. It is important for Shoreham Independent Traders Collective to now take the next step in becoming a cooperative organisation to enable us to have a recognised voice. We want Shoreham to be an even greater place for all traders to take a chance with an idea and add to the wonderful quirky and friendly business community. Here’s to 2021 and a year for Shoreham town centre to flourish!
